What is a diocese?

A diocese is a district of the Catholic Church under the pastoral care of a bishop. A larger or more historically significant diocese led by an archbishop is called an archdiocese; Eastern Catholic equivalents are called eparchies. Each diocese is made up of parishes, served by priests and deacons, and centered on the bishop's cathedral. Together, the U.S. dioceses form the Catholic Church in America.
