Why belong here

The National Blue Army Shrine offers a rare combination of an authentic Fatima experience and a true Catholic retreat house within easy reach of the U.S. Northeast. Daily Mass, the Rosary, confessions, and Eucharistic Adoration are offered in a powerful setting — a 1,400-seat octagonal chapel crowned by a towering bronze Immaculate Heart of Mary — surrounded by devotional sites (the Holy House of Loreto replica, the Capelinha, the Rosary Garden, Stations of the Cross, and the Blue Army Cemetery). Group retreats, family pilgrimages, the annual anniversary of the Fatima apparitions, monthly Spanish Masses, and a First Saturday Virtual Pilgrimage make the Shrine a living center of Marian devotion rather than a static monument.

About World Apostolate of Fatima Blue Army Shrine · Asbury, New Jersey

The National Blue Army Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima is a Catholic Marian shrine and retreat center operated by the World Apostolate of Fatima USA, situated on roughly 150 acres of farmland in Washington Township (Asbury mailing address), Warren County, New Jersey, within the Diocese of Metuchen. It was built in 1978 as a direct response to a question Our Lord reportedly asked Sister Lucia — 'What is being done to spread devotion to the Immaculate Heart of My Mother?' — and centers on an octagonal chapel capped by a towering bronze statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary that holds out the Rosary and the Scapular. The complex, which welcomes more than 50,000 pilgrims a year, also contains a scale replica of the Holy House of Loreto (dedicated 1973), the Capelinha (an exact replica of the chapel on the Fatima apparition site), a Rosary Garden, a Stations of the Cross, the Blue Army Cemetery, and numerous outdoor devotional shrines. It is the Vatican's official voice on the authentic message of Fatima and serves as the only Jubilee pilgrimage site outside Spain during the 2025–2026 Extraordinary Marian Jubilee Year marking 100 years of the First Saturday Devotion.

History of the Blue Army and the Shrine

The Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima was founded in 1947 at St. Mary's Church in Plainfield, New Jersey, by Monsignor Harold V. Colgan and layman John M. Haffert, thirty years after the apparitions at Fatima. The Cold War-era movement rallied laity to pray the Rosary daily, wear the Brown Scapular, and practice the Five First Saturdays devotion, naming themselves the 'Blue Army' in contrast to the Soviet Red Army. In the early 1950s, Colgan and Haffert established the Ave Maria Institute on Haffert's Washington, NJ farm, which became the administrative center for the movement. Haffert later donated his farm to the Blue Army; the Holy House Chapel was dedicated in 1973, the main Immaculate Heart of Mary chapel was built in 1978 and completed in 1979, and the grounds have grown to include the Capelinha, the Rosary Garden, the Blue Army Cemetery, and numerous outdoor shrines.

  • 1947 — Blue Army founded at St. Mary's, Plainfield, NJ by Msgr. Colgan and John Haffert
  • Early 1950s — Ave Maria Institute established on Haffert's farm
  • 1950s — Domus Pacis built in Fatima, Portugal (international HQ)
  • 1973 — Holy House Chapel dedicated
  • 1978–1979 — Immaculate Heart of Mary chapel constructed and completed
  • 30–40 million Blue Army Pledges signed worldwide

Architecture and Sacred Spaces

The Shrine's centerpiece is a monumental 1,400-seat octagonal chapel whose sweeping roof rises into a central tower representing the Virgin's mantle. Atop the tower stands a 24-foot bronze statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary holding out a Rosary and a Scapular. Beneath this main chapel, the Blessed Sacrament Chapel houses the Eucharistic Presence described as the heart of the Shrine.

  • Octagonal Immaculate Heart of Mary chapel — 1,400 seats
  • Central tower (described as 130–145 ft) shaped as a crown
  • 24-foot bronze Immaculate Heart of Mary statue holding Rosary and Scapular
  • Blessed Sacrament Chapel (Eucharistic Presence)
  • Holy House Chapel — replica of the Holy House of Loreto (dedicated 1973)
  • Capelinha — exact replica of the Fatima apparition chapel

Holy House Chapel

The Holy House Chapel, dedicated in 1973, is described as the heart of the Our Lady of Fatima Retreat Center. It is a scale replica of the Holy House of Loreto, the home of the Holy Family now enshrined in Loreto, Italy. The builders reportedly took stones from the House of Loreto, pulverized them, and added them to the chapel's mortar, making the building more than a simple representation. Its altar contains a section of the very altar in the chapel at Tuy, Spain, where in 1929 Sister Lucia received her vision of the Trinity and Our Lady of Fatima. A wooden statue of St. Joseph as he appeared at Fatima during the Miracle of the Sun greets pilgrims.

  • Scale replica of the Holy House of Loreto
  • Mortar contains pulverized stones from the original Holy House
  • Altar incorporates section of the Tuy, Spain altar (1929 Lucia vision)
  • Wooden statue of St. Joseph as at the Miracle of the Sun

The Capelinha

The Capelinha — Portuguese for 'little chapel' — is one of only two exact replicas in the world of the chapel built at Fatima on the site of Our Lady's apparitions. It houses the Pilgrim Virgin Statue, which is itself an exact replica of the miraculous Pilgrim Virgin Statue carried in procession at Fatima, and was generously donated by the Catholic Portuguese community.

The Blue Army Cemetery on the property holds the graves of the movement's three founders: Monsignor Colgan, John Haffert, and Mother Mary Stanislaus.
