History & Founding
According to the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux's own published history, the Vietnamese parish of Thanh Gia (Holy Family) was established in 1981 during the episcopate of Bishop Warren L. Boudreaux, who in that same year launched the first Bishop's Stewardship Appeal, the first diocesan school board, and the first issue of the Bayou Catholic. The new parish was created in Amelia to serve Vietnamese Catholics who had settled along the bayous of Assumption, Lafourche, Terrebonne, and St. Mary parishes, joining the French, German, Italian, African American, and Cajun communities of the diocese. Over the decades it grew into a multi-site faith community, adding Vietnamese Mass and confession locations in Schriever (the Vietnamese Community Center / Vietnamese Martyrs), Houma (Our Lady of the Holy Rosary), and Larose (St. Peter) so that Vietnamese faithful could gather close to home anywhere in south Louisiana.

Our Clergy
Pastoral care at Thanh Gia / Holy Family is entrusted to members of the Congregation of the Mother of the Redeemer (CRM), a Vietnamese religious institute. According to the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux's published clergy list, Rev. Augustine Ky Truong, CRM serves as Administrator of Thanh Gia Catholic Church in Amelia, with Rev. Romeo (Billy) Velasco as Parochial Vicar. Rev. John Mary Dang Dang Khoa, CRM was reappointed as Parochial Vicar for a one-year term in the diocese's 2026 pastoral appointments.
