Saints Philip and James is a historic Catholic parish in the Charles Village neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland, joined with the Johns Hopkins University Catholic Community as a university parish. Founded in 1898 on North Charles Street, the church has stood as a Baltimore landmark for more than 120 years. Since July 1, 2010, pastoral care has been entrusted to the Dominican Friars of the Province of Saint Joseph, whose four-fold charism of prayer, study, communal life, and apostolate shapes parish life. The community worships in one of Baltimore's most architecturally distinctive churches, ministers to the poor through a food pantry, and serves the students, faculty, and staff of Johns Hopkins.

The pastor's letter from Fr. Michael Weibley, O.P. introduces Saints Philip and James as a vibrant, diverse parish in the heart of Charles Village, serving the people of Baltimore and the Johns Hopkins Catholic community. The parish mission is 'To Encounter Jesus Christ in His Church and to Share Him with Others,' and this conviction shapes every ministry, from Sunday Mass to the food pantry. The Dominican charism of preaching for the salvation of souls shapes parish life through the four pillars of Dominican life: prayer, study, communal life, and apostolate.
Our History
Founded in 1898 on North Charles Street, Saints Philip and James originally served the North Charles Street corridor west of Govans as well as the Johns Hopkins community. Over the decades its territory was reshaped as new parishes (such as the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in 1959) were created, but the parish endured as a Charles Village landmark. On July 1, 2010, Archbishop Edwin O'Brien entrusted the parish and the ministry to Johns Hopkins to the Dominican Friars of the Province of Saint Joseph. The Newman Center was then moved into the lower level of the parish rectory, and two Dominican friars were assigned as chaplains to the university's Catholic community.

Dominican Identity
Saints Philip and James is a parish 'given to Dominicans, and Dominicans given to the parish.' The Order of Preachers' four-fold life of prayer, study, communal life, and apostolate is meant to shape the parish's worship, intellectual formation, community life, and service to the poor and to the Johns Hopkins students.

Mass and Liturgy
The parish celebrates a full schedule of daily and Sunday Masses, including a Sunday Low Mass, a Solemn Mass, and an evening Sunday Mass, as well as a Wednesday Mass celebrated ad orientem and a Saturday morning Mass at the Mary Altar. Holy Day Masses are offered at noon and 7:00 PM. The parish is committed to beautiful liturgy as the central encounter with Christ.

Ministries and Outreach
Parish life extends well beyond the sanctuary. The food pantry serves neighbors in need in Charles Village, the Mental Health Ministry accompanies parishioners through mental-health struggles, the Catholic Community at Johns Hopkins ministers to students/faculty/staff through the Newman Center, and a music ministry under the Music Director & Organist supports the liturgy. There are also opportunities for faith-and-culture lectures, a book club, and parish service such as cleaning the church.
