History
Saints Peter and Paul Parish was established in 1897 by Polish immigrants who petitioned the Bishop of Scranton. The first church was a small wooden structure built in 1898. In 1923, under Rev. Anthony Dudkiewicz, a larger brick Romanesque-style church was constructed, which remains the main worship site today. In 2009, the parish was formed through the consolidation of several local parishes. In 2022, it welcomed parishioners from St. Andre Bessette Parish. The parish has also been home to 11 priests and over 30 Bernardine Sisters, and in 2019, renovated its old cafeteria/auditorium into Bernardine Hall.
Architecture & Art
The church features 70 stunning stained glass windows imported from Munich, Germany, depicting the life of Jesus and Mary, Peter and Paul, and symbols of the Holy Church. Murals along the upper clerestory walls and ceilings depict various saints and the four evangelists. The apse mural above the main altar depicts Jesus as King of the Universe, surrounded by Saints Peter and Paul and colorful angels against a blue sky.
Notable Features
The parish owns a Rodgers Infinity Electronic Organ, used at the 2015 Papal Mass in Philadelphia. The old cafeteria/auditorium was renovated into Bernardine Hall in 2019, now available for events like weddings, bingo, and parties. The parish has produced 11 priests and over 30 Bernardine Sisters.
