History
Catholic life in the Sherrill area began in the 1840s when German and Luxembourg families settled the Mississippi River bluffs. They built a log church in 1852, originally known as St. Williams, which served as the first worship site of what would become Ss. Peter & Paul. As the community grew, the log structure was replaced by a frame church in the 1860s and the parish took the name Sts. Peter and Paul. The present brick church on Sherrill Road was completed in 1889 and remains the parish's sanctuary. The parish was formally incorporated as a non-profit corporation in Iowa in December 1911. In recent decades Ss. Peter & Paul has been clustered with neighboring rural parishes into the St. John Baptist de La Salle Pastorate.

St. John Baptist de La Salle Pastorate
Ss. Peter & Paul is one of six Catholic worship sites that make up the St. John Baptist de La Salle Pastorate in the Dubuque area. The pastorate takes its name from St. John Baptist de La Salle, the founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and patron saint of teachers, reflecting the pastorate's commitment to Catholic education through La Salle Catholic School. Fr. Tyler Raymond serves as pastor of the entire pastorate and as pastoral coordinator of the school.

Sacramental Preparation
The pastorate coordinates Baptism and Wedding preparation centrally, with families asked to contact Lynne McDermott for both sacraments. Couples and families preparing for these sacraments are connected through the pastorate office so that all paperwork, formation, and liturgical planning are handled consistently across the six churches.

La Salle Catholic School
Ss. Peter & Paul families are part of La Salle Catholic School, the regional Catholic elementary school that serves all six parishes of the pastorate. Located at 835 Church Street, PO Box 368, Holy Cross, Iowa 52053, the school is named for St. John Baptist de La Salle, the patron of the pastorate and patron saint of teachers. Liturgical Ministries and Getting Involved
Across the pastorate, parishioners are invited to sign up for liturgical roles — including acolytes, hospitality/ushers, sacristans, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, and music ministry. The pastorate has used a unified online sign-up system so that parishioners from any of the six churches (including Ss. Peter & Paul) can volunteer at whichever Mass they attend. Informational meetings for music ministry, acolytes, hospitality, sacristans, lectors, and Eucharistic ministers have been scheduled at the pastorate level.
