Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Damon, Texas is a small rural parish of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, sharing clergy, a website, and weekly bulletins with St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Needville. The parish traces its origins to 1925, when Czech-descent Catholic families on Damon Mound finally got their own church after a decade of traveling twelve or more miles to Mass across open prairie. Mass is celebrated Sunday morning and Wednesday morning in the parish chapel, and the community takes pride in its Czech-Catholic heritage.

History of Sts. Cyril & Methodius

Czech Catholic families began settling the Damon Mound area in 1913, when the nearest Catholic church was twelve miles away in Needville and roads were only open prairie. In 1923 Father James Kveton, who was already pastor of Rosenberg with four missions, agreed to add Damon after finding many Catholic families gathered around a sick boy he had come to anoint. He said Mass in the home of Paul Orsak until a church could be built. The church was completed in the fall of 1925; on January 17, 1926 Damon was made a mission of Needville, and the building was dedicated by Bishop Christopher E. Byrne as Sts. Cyril & Methodius on July 5, 1927. A larger church seating 400 was dedicated by Bishop John L. Morkovsky on April 19, 1970. On July 1, 1977 — fifty-one years after the first Mass — Bishop Fiorenza formally recognized Sts. Cyril & Methodius as a parish church, with Father Gilbert F. Pekar as its first resident pastor. In 2000 the original 1925 church was converted into offices and classrooms downstairs while the upper portion was carefully restored as a chapel, blessed by Bishop Joseph A. Fiorenza on November 5, 2000.

• 1966 — Plans finalized for a new 400-seat church under Father Kenneth Mikulik.
• 1970 — New church dedicated by Bishop John L. Morkovsky (Apr 19, 1970).
• 1977 — Recognized as a parish church for the first time on July 1, 1977.
• 2000 — 1925 church restored; chapel blessed by Bishop Joseph A. Fiorenza (Nov 5, 2000).

Sts. Cyril & Methodius celebrates Sunday Mass at 8:30 AM in the church and Wednesday Mass at 8:00 AM in the restored chapel. The parish notes that Sunday Mass times may change seasonally; the weekly bulletin is the best up-to-date reference.

Faith Formation & Religious Education

Faith Formation is run jointly with St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Needville and meets on Wednesdays. Classes for the 2025-2026 school year began on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, and online registration opens July 1 each year through the Needville Catholic website.

Sacraments & Devotions

Beyond Sunday and Wednesday Mass, the parish offers the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Wednesday mornings after Mass and Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for most of the day Wednesday in the chapel. Anointing of the Sick is a beloved devotion celebrated on the first Wednesday of each month, continuing the Church's ancient tradition of healing prayer. Communion is brought to the homebound on a limited basis — parishioners are asked to call the parish office in an emergency.

Parish Life & Shared Mission with St. Michael the Archangel

Sts. Cyril & Methodius is a parish in its own right but is intentionally paired with St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Needville, twelve miles away: they share clergy, a website (needvillecatholic.com), and a weekly bulletin, while each parish keeps its own office and mailing address. Together they offer Catholic faith formation, liturgical ministry, outreach to the homebound, and parish social life — including KC Monday-night Bingo at the Columbus Club Hall (currently suspended) and ongoing faith-community gatherings.
