About Sts. Cyril and Methodius Parish

Sts. Cyril and Methodius is a Roman Catholic parish in Windber, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, served by the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. The parish church is located at 604 Graham Avenue, and the parish phone is (814) 467-7042. It is pastored by Rev. Matthew Misurda. Like many parishes of southwestern Pennsylvania, it was founded to minister to the immigrant coal-mining communities of the region, in this case the Slovak, Czech, and Polish families who settled in the Windber 'patch.'

History & Immigrant Heritage

Established in the late 1890s, Sts. Cyril and Methodius was one of the ethnic parishes created across southwestern Pennsylvania's coal country to serve the Slavonic immigrants who came to work the mines that fed Pittsburgh's steel mills. The parish was, and remains, the spiritual home of Slovak, Czech, and Polish Catholic families of Windber and Paint Township. The patron saints — Cyril (Constantine) and Methodius (Michael), brothers from Thessalonica — created the Slavonic alphabet and translated the liturgy and Scriptures, an especially fitting patronage for a Slavic-heritage parish.

  • Late 1890s: parish established to serve Windber's Slovak, Czech, and Polish coal-country faithful.
  • Parish heritage visible in gravestones of its two cemeteries, many engraved in Polish or Slovak.
  • Traditional ethnic foods (pierogi, haluski) sold during Lent.
  • Wigilia (Polish Christmas Eve dinner) celebrated during Advent.

The parish is served by Rev. Matthew Misurda, Pastor, as listed on the parish's official diocesan web page. Inquiries can be directed to the parish office at (814) 467-7042 or by email at [email protected].

Cemetery II is the newer of the two and receives most new burials. Both are affiliated with Sts. Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, and many gravestones are engraved in Polish or Slovak — a tangible record of the parish's founding generations.
