About St. Vincent de Paul · Tallassee, Alabama

St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Parish is a small, family-style Roman Catholic mission parish located at 620 Gilmer Avenue in Tallassee, Alabama. Sitting on the main thoroughfare (Gilmer Avenue is both Alabama Highway 14 and Highway 229) in a small town between Montgomery and Auburn, the parish serves a wide stretch of rural Elmore and Tallapoosa counties within the Montgomery Deanery of the (Metropolitan) Archdiocese of Mobile. Why belong here

St. Vincent de Paul offers the warmth of a small, close-knit Catholic community in the heart of Tallassee, with daily and weekend Mass, a Spanish-language vigil on the first Saturday of each month, weekly Eucharistic Adoration with Rosary, and a faith-formation program for both children (Sunday School) and adults. Parishioners also enjoy the unique summer tradition of 'Church in the Pines,' an outdoor Mass at Kowaliga Marina on Lake Martin, which reflects the parish's missionary reach across rural Elmore and Tallapoosa counties.

History & Founding

St. Vincent de Paul was brought into being through the initiative of a wealthy Tallassee woman, Mrs. Mildred W. Blount, who reached out to Bishop Fulton J. Sheen in the early 1950s and was told he would preach the first Mass if she built a church. With land donated by the Blounts along Gilmer Avenue and Vincentian mission priests going door-to-door, the parish was born — Sheen preached the first Mass in 1954, the church (and adjoining rectory) was built in 1955 in an Old World French style, and it was consecrated that same year. The parish entity itself dates to 1946 in IRS records.
