History of the Parish & Catholic Presence in Madison County
The Catholic roots in what is now Madison County stretch back to the sixteenth century: in 1539, Hernando de Soto and his company — including Catholic priests — wintered in Apalachee territory spanning modern Madison, Jefferson, and Leon Counties, and a Christmas Mass was likely celebrated during the encampment. In 1675, Bishop Gabriel Díaz Vara Calderón of Santiago de Cuba visited the Franciscan missions of the Apalachee along the Apalachicola River, confirming Native American converts and recording detailed observations of their devotional life. The current St. Vincent de Paul church building was constructed circa 1905–1906, during an era when the Diocese of Mobile–Birmingham covered this part of Florida. After the 1975 establishment of the Diocese of Pensacola–Tallahassee, the parish passed into the new diocese; today it is one of the smaller parishes of the Eastern Deanery.
