Parish History

The Viatorians came to Las Vegas in 1954 at Bishop Robert Dwyer's invitation to run the new Bishop Gorman High School and to staff their own parish, St. Viator. Founding pastor Fr. Thomas Fitzpatrick, C.S.V., celebrated the first public Mass on October 21, 1954 — the feast of St. Viator — in a bank at Charleston Boulevard and Maryland Parkway. After temporary quarters in a Dominican sisters' chapel and Carpenters' Hall, the parish built a church at St. Louis and Eastern in 1955, but had to tear it down 18 months later because the former city-dump site could not support the structures. The parish returned to a storefront on Charleston Boulevard while waiting for a permanent home.
