About St. Thomas More · Baltimore, Maryland

St. Thomas More is a Roman Catholic parish in the Hamilton/Perring Parkway area of Baltimore, Maryland, historically serving a diverse community of parishioners across economic, ethnic, and age groups. For decades the parish centered its life on sacramental worship, especially the Eucharist, prayer, and outreach through word, witness, education, and evangelization. In 2024 the parish was canonically merged into Immaculate Heart of Mary parish as part of the Archdiocese of Baltimore’s citywide restructuring, though the St. Thomas More church building remains part of the Catholic community’s heritage. Visitors and former parishioners remember St. Thomas More as a welcoming parish family committed to sharing faith, love, and the Word of God.

History

In the late 1950s, growing neighborhoods around Perring Parkway led the Archdiocese of Baltimore to purchase twelve acres on McClean Boulevard in 1959. Cornerstones for the church, parish center, and convent were laid in 1960, and the newly appointed pastor, Father Thomas Kelly, held initial meetings with volunteers in a rented store in the Hamilton Park Shopping Center. St. Thomas More’s first Mass was celebrated on September 10, 1961, with the parish school opening the same week under the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill. The school closed in June 1988 due to declining enrollment, and the parish mortgage was paid in full on January 10, 1997. On December 1, 2024, St. Thomas More was canonically merged into Immaculate Heart of Mary parish.
