History
Originally founded as St. Mary of the Angels in 1906 from territory of St. Joseph’s Parish, Roxbury, the parish began with Masses in a car barn. Construction of the current basement church began in 1907, with plans for an upper church never realized. The parish saw significant demographic growth in the 1970s, including the first Spanish Mass in 1971 and the first Via Crucis in 1974. It established youth programs, a food pantry in 1974, and community initiatives like 'Hands Around Egleston' to address neighborhood needs. The parish was renamed St. Thomas Aquinas in 2020, but its history as 'The Heart of Egleston Square' continues.
Ministries
The parish offers a range of ministries including St. Vincent de Paul Society, which provides food vouchers and household items; visits to Shattuck Shelter on the third Thursday of each month; home visits for the homebound; and transportation to the 12:30 p.m. Spanish Mass on Sundays.
