History: From Tahawus to Newcomb

St. Therese Parish traces its beginnings to the former mining community of Tahawus in the heart of the Adirondacks, where the National Lead company extracted ore. The original St. Therese's Church was built there to serve the Catholic workers and their families. When the mines closed and National Lead relocated its workforce about ten miles to the hamlet of Newcomb in the late 1960s/early 1970s, the wooden church building was itself physically moved from Tahawus to Newcomb and re-erected on Adams Lane, where it remains the parish church today. The migration of the building mirrored the migration of the people, and the parish has continued serving the Newcomb community under the Diocese of Ogdensburg ever since.
