History of the Parish
Founded in 1881, St. Teresa of Avila has shared the Catholic life of Union County with neighboring communities for well over a century. The parish's historical connection to the local Catholic faithful is reflected in nearby St. John's Cemetery in Prairie Township, where burials of parishioners date back to 1886. In recent years, the parish has been brought into Holy Angels Pastorate — a coalition of eight southeast South Dakota parishes formed under Bishop Donald DeGrood's 'Set Ablaze' pastoral initiative.
- Parish roots trace to 1881
- Linked historically with St. John's Cemetery (earliest burial: 1886)
- Member of Holy Angels Pastorate under Bishop DeGrood's reorganization
Holy Angels Pastorate
Holy Angels Pastorate unites eight Catholic parishes in the southeastern corner of the Diocese of Sioux Falls into a single missionary community. Bishop DeGrood organized the diocese into twenty-five pastorates, and the parishes of southeast South Dakota — including St. Agnes in Vermillion, St. Thomas More Newman Center at the University of South Dakota, St. Teresa of Calcutta in Dakota Dunes, St. Peter in Jefferson, St. Joseph in Elk Point, St. Teresa in Beresford, St. Patrick in Wakonda, and Good Shepherd in Centerville — were brought together as Pastorate #15 before being renamed Holy Angels Pastorate.
- Pastorate mission: 'Lifelong Catholic Missionary Discipleship through God's Love'
- Tied to Bishop DeGrood's pastoral letter 'Set Ablaze: Unleash the Fire of the Holy Spirit'
- Eight member parishes across Union and Clay counties
