About St. Sebastian · Waverly, Illinois

St. Sebastian is a small Roman Catholic parish located at 265 E. Elm Street in Waverly, Illinois (Morgan County), in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois. Founded in 1858, the parish is one of four congregations that together make up the Quad Pastoral Unit — alongside St. Mary's of New Berlin, Sacred Heart of Franklin, and Visitation BVM of Alexander — sharing priests, staff, and a mission of forming disciples through worship, service, and proclamation of God's Word. Despite its small size (about 30 registered families and 69 parishioners), St. Sebastian maintains a regular weekend Mass schedule, hosts weekly Eucharistic Adoration on a rotating basis with the other Quad Parishes, and remains an active member of the wider diocesan family. The parish was honored as a Sesquicentennial House of Worship in 2023 by the Illinois State Historical Society, recognizing 165 continuous years of Catholic worship in Waverly.

Why belong here

St. Sebastian offers a warm, welcoming home for Catholics in rural Waverly and the surrounding Morgan County farmland — a small but active parish where every family is known by name. As one of the four Quad Parishes (with St. Mary's in New Berlin, Sacred Heart in Franklin, and Visitation BVM in Alexander), it shares priests and ministries so that even a tiny community can sustain a robust sacramental life: a Saturday Vigil Mass, a weekly weekday Mass, rotating Eucharistic Adoration on Thursdays, and confession by appointment. The parish is rooted in 165+ years of continuous Catholic worship on its site (founded 1858), and its Quad Parish Mission — to make Christ more visible through worship, service, and proclamation of God's Word — gives clear shape to parish life.

History of St. Sebastian Parish

St. Sebastian Catholic Church traces its origins to 1858, when Catholic families in and around Waverly organized under the spiritual care of priests traveling out from Springfield. Father John Janssen — who would later become Bishop of Belleville — began visiting the community in January 1859 and offered the first Masses in the home of Mr. John Haugh. By the fall of 1860 the congregation had grown large enough that on October 26, 1860 the foundation of a new church was laid; the building was ready in time for Christmas Mass that same year. The parish has maintained continuous Catholic worship on the Waverly site ever since, and in 2023 was recognized by the Illinois State Historical Society's Sesquicentennial House of Worship Awards Program for 165 years of faithful presence. Today it shares pastoral ministry with three neighboring parishes as one of the four Quad Parishes of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.
