Why belong here

St. Romuald offers the rare privilege of belonging to one of the oldest continuously occupied Catholic parishes in Western Kentucky — founded in 1810 on the very ground it still stands. Worshippers can attend three Sunday Masses (Saturday vigil plus two Sunday morning), daily Mass Monday through Friday, weekly confession on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and 24-hour adoration on First Fridays. The pastor additionally brings the Eucharist to the local hospital and to Medco, extending the parish's pastoral reach to homebound and elderly Catholics throughout Breckinridge County.

Parish History

St. Romuald was founded in 1810 by Father Charles Nerinckx, a Belgian missionary priest who played a foundational role in establishing Catholic life across early Kentucky. The parish was built on three acres donated by Zachariah Mattingly and has occupied that same site continuously ever since — a remarkable distinction that makes it the oldest parish in the Diocese of Owensboro still located at its founding place.

  • Founded 1810 by Fr. Charles Nerinckx (missionary from Belgium)
  • Original three acres donated by Zachariah Mattingly
  • First log church built 1810
  • Second church built 1841 (outgrown by congregation)
  • Third and present church built 1897–1900
  • Kentucky historical marker #2329 dedicated August 27, 2010 (bicentennial)

The Present Church Building

The third and current St. Romuald church was constructed between 1897 and 1900 to accommodate the growing Breckinridge County Catholic community. It replaced the original 1810 log church and the 1841 church that had succeeded it. A Kentucky historical marker stands at the property commemorating more than two centuries of Catholic worship on the site.

  • Construction: 1897–1900
  • Sits on original 1810 Mattingly donation
  • Subject of Kentucky historical marker (#2329)
