About St. Rita of Cascia Shrine-Chapel · Chicago, Illinois
St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel is a national Catholic shrine of the Midwest, located at 7740 S. Western Avenue in the Auburn Gresham / Beverly neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. It has been served by Augustinian Friars since 1907 and is dedicated to St. Rita of Cascia, the 15th-century Augustinian nun known as the patron saint of impossible causes. The Shrine Chapel is connected to St. Rita of Cascia High School and houses a first-class relic of St. Rita dating to 1906 and the historic 1909 glass-eyed statue. Its centerpiece is a monthly Perpetual Novena Mass, held the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. with the Sacrament of Reconciliation offered from 6:00 p.m., plus a Solemn Novena leading up to the Feast of St. Rita on May 22 each year. The chapel also serves as a destination for quiet pilgrimage, prayer requests, and devotion to St. Rita and the community of saints depicted in its nine mosaic shrines.

Why belong here
Pilgrims come to St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel to encounter one of the Midwest's most unusual devotional spaces: a century-old shrine housing a first-class relic of St. Rita of Cascia, a 1909 glass-eyed statue, 1932 stained glass, and 2007 Byzantine mosaics of nine saints — all woven into a daily rhythm of prayer that centers on the monthly Perpetual Novena Mass (first Thursday, 7:00 p.m.) and the Solemn Novena leading to the May 22 Feast of St. Rita. Visitors can submit prayer requests online, attend Reconciliation at 6:00 p.m. before each novena, watch the liturgy livestreamed on YouTube, and stay afterwards for the well-known Racine Danish Kringle social — a tradition that has drawn community, students, and devotees to the Southwest Side for more than a century.

History of the Shrine Chapel
The Shrine was founded in 1905 at 63rd Street and Oakley Avenue on Chicago's Southwest Side and has been served by Augustinian Friars since 1907, the year after the arrival of the first-class relic of St. Rita (1906). The original glass-eyed statue of St. Rita dates to 1909, and the stained glass windows that still flank it — depicting St. Rita's thorns and roses and the official seal of the Augustinian Order — were made in 1932. As the parish grew, three mission churches were spun off in 1909 (St. Clare of Montefalco, St. Nicholas of Tolentine, and St. Gall), and in 1916 the parish moved a few blocks west into its own dedicated building. The Shrine itself moved in 1990 with the St. Rita of Cascia High School campus to its present location at 7740 S. Western Avenue and was comprehensively renovated in the Jubilee Year 2000 by Un-Real, Inc. of Chicago. Two major waves of shrine dedications followed in 2007, creating the mosaic-rich devotional space seen today.

The Nine Saints' Shrines (2007)
On April 15, 2007 the St. Rita Monastery Community hosted a Dedication Mass to bless nine new devotional shrines along the chapel walls. Each shrine was individually anointed with Holy Chrism by Bishop John Michael Botean, the Romanian Catholic Bishop of the United States and friend of the Augustinians, in a blessing many attendees said they had never seen before. The art direction was provided by Mr. Jim Rouen of Un-Real, Inc. (Chicago); Byzantine mosaics in hand-cut Italian glass were executed by artist Joe Folise of Morton Grove; additional sculpture and mosaics were crafted by Daprato Rigali Studios and Evan Lewis Studios of Chicago; and a glass statue was imported from Italy. Every shrine was donated by a family or individual, each choosing saints who held special meaning and who reflect different facets of St. Rita High School and the wider faith community. Below each mosaic or sculpture is an engraved biography of the saint depicted.

Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Augustine & the Augustinian Tree of Life (December 2007)
On December 12, 2007 — the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe — then-Auxiliary Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, M.Sp.S., celebrated an all-school Mass at St. Rita of Cascia High School and dedicated three more shrines within the Shrine Chapel. The first was the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine featuring a hand-painted, authentic recreation of the image enshrined in Mexico; it was donated by Bishop Gustavo himself and additionally funded by Mr. Anthony Spalla and family. The second was a Shrine of St. Augustine, donated by Mrs. Jane Nedvar. The third was the Augustinian Tree of Life, a sculptural installation mounted above the main chapel doors whose leaves bear the names of every Augustinian Blessed and Saint. Joe Folise, who had created the nine Byzantine mosaics earlier that year, oversaw the Tree of Life as well. A plaque naming all donors and family members honored through the shrine is maintained in the chapel.

The Hanging Banners — Life of St. Rita
Installed as part of the 2000 renovation, a series of hanging banners inside the sanctuary narrate the life of St. Rita from baptism to her death. The final banner depicts a dove representing peace, calling to mind St. Rita's lifelong vocation as a peacemaker in her family, her community, and to all she encountered — and completing the story of her eternal reward.
- Banners installed during the 2000 renovation by Un-Real, Inc.
- Trace St. Rita's life journey: baptism → vocation as wife, mother, widow → Augustinian nun → death
- Final banner: dove of peace
- Mirrors the visitor's own journey from baptism to eternal life with God
Perpetual Novena to St. Rita of Cascia
The Shrine's flagship devotion is its monthly Perpetual Novena Mass to St. Rita of Cascia, held the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 PM Central. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is offered beforehand from 6:00 PM, and every Novena Mass is livestreamed on the Shrine Chapel's YouTube channel so that devotees across the country — and the world — can join the prayer. After Mass, attendees are invited to stay and socialize over a slice of the famous Racine Danish Kringle, a tradition that has become part of the Shrine's signature hospitality. From time to time the date is moved (e.g., July 2024 was moved to Tuesday, July 2 to accommodate Independence Day).
- When: first Thursday of every month, 7:00 PM Central
- Reconciliation: 6:00 – 7:00 PM
- Liturgy: 7:00 PM Novena Mass & Prayers

Solemn Novena and Feast Day of St. Rita (May)
Each May the monthly novena expands into the Solemn Novena of Preparation, running May 13 through May 21 at 7:00 PM nightly, and culminates on May 22 — the liturgical Feast of St. Rita of Cascia — with two Masses at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Reconciliation is available at 9:00 AM and 6:00 PM on the feast day. This is the Shrine's highest liturgical celebration of the year and draws pilgrims from across the Midwest.
- Solemn Novena of Preparation: May 13 – May 21, 7:00 PM nightly
- Solemn Feast of St. Rita: May 22, 10:00 AM Mass and 7:00 PM Mass

Prayer Requests
The Shrine Chapel maintains an online prayer-request ministry through its website, allowing visitors to submit their intentions to be remembered at the next Novena Mass. Many of the requests reflect the traditional patronage of St. Rita of Cascia as the 'patron saint of impossible causes' — petitions for healing, family reconciliation, employment, and other seemingly impossible needs.

Clergy & Augustinian Staffing
The Shrine Chapel is staffed by the Augustinian Friars of the Midwest Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel. The longtime Shrine Director, Rev. Thomas R. (Tom) McCarthy, O.S.A. — an alumnus of St. Rita of Cascia High School (Class of 1983), former teacher, principal, and president of the school, and former director of community relations — was elected Prior Provincial of the Province on December 22, 2025, and was installed in the Shrine Chapel itself on June 10, 2026. Fr. Tom is also in his 14th year as Vocation Director for the Midwest Province and is the Prior of the Pre-Novitiate Community of St. Clare of Montefalco Friary in Chicago. He was previously named a Papal Missionary of Mercy by Pope Francis in 2018 and served at the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization in Rome and as Prior/Director of the Augustinian Marylake Shrine in King City, Ontario. The Shrine Chapel shares Augustinian roots with the neighboring St. Rita of Cascia Parish (6243 S. Fairfield), whose pastor is Rev. Homero Sanchez, O.S.A. and parochial vicar is Rev. Samuel Joutras, O.S.A.

Connection to St. Rita of Cascia High School & Parish
The Shrine Chapel is physically located on the St. Rita of Cascia High School campus — a Catholic, Augustinian-run college-preparatory school founded in 1905 as part of the same Augustinian venture that established the parish next door. The High School's Director of Community Relations is also the Shrine Chapel Director, reflecting the deep institutional connection between school, parish, and shrine. The High School and its President, Principal and Board rely on and promote the Shrine as a center of Catholic identity for students and alumni.

- Augustinian-run, co-educational Catholic college-prep
- Fr. Tom McCarthy served the High School for 21 years as teacher, campus minister, Principal, President, and Chairman of the Board before becoming Shrine Director
- The 2007 shrine installations are linked to saints who 'represent the different facets of St. Rita High School and our faith community'
Augustinian Heritage
St. Rita of Cascia was herself an Augustinian nun, and the Order of St. Augustine (O.S.A.) has staffed this Shrine since 1907 — making it one of the most prominent Augustinian devotional sites in the United States. The Midwest Augustinians, formally the Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel, are based in Chicago and were the first foundation of the Order west of the Appalachian Mountains (1905). The same Order produced Pope Leo XIV (Robert Prevost), who served as Prior Provincial of this province from 1999 to 2001, giving the Shrine Chapel a notable connection to the current papacy.
