St. Raymond of Peñafort (c. 1175 – January 6, 1275) was a Catalan Dominican friar, canon lawyer, and Master General of the Order of Preachers. He is best known for compiling the Decretals of Pope Gregory IX, a body of medieval Church legislation that remained in force until the 1917 Code of Canon Law. Canonized by Pope Clement VIII in 1601, he is venerated as the patron saint of canon lawyers and lawyers in general. His feast day is celebrated on January 7 (moved from January 23 in the 1969 calendar reform).
