About St. Pius X Parish

St. Pius X is the only Catholic parish in Moab, Utah, and the spiritual hub for Catholics across Grand County and the surrounding canyon country. It is one of the smaller parishes in the Diocese of Salt Lake City and is supported by the diocese to minister not only to the year-round local community but also to the tens of thousands of tourists who pass through Moab on their way to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Because so much of the weekend congregation is transient, the parish has a long tradition of warmly welcoming visitors at Mass.

History

The parish at Moab was formally established in 1957, with the church building dedicated on November 7, 1955. From the beginning it has been a small, mission-style community. In 1985 the parish took on pastoral responsibility for Sacred Heart Mission in nearby La Sal, which serves the Navajo community in that part of southeastern Utah — sacramental records for that mission continue to be held by St. Pius X. The parish today also ministers to Blanding Station as an outstation, and shares its administrator with St. Joseph Parish in Monticello.

Clergy and Staff

The parish is currently administered by Rev. Noel P. Ancheta, who also serves as Administrator of Saint Joseph Parish in Monticello and Sacred Heart Mission in La Sal. As is common for small rural parishes in the diocese, one priest ministers to multiple communities across southeastern Utah from this base in Moab.

Visitor and Tourist Ministry

Because Moab sits between Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, the parish regularly welcomes a large number of out-of-town Catholics each weekend. Visitors to St. Pius X have noted that the priest traditionally asks visitors to stand and be recognized near the end of Mass — a reminder that the parish's mission includes these travelers as much as the local community. Those planning a visit are encouraged to call ahead to confirm times.
