Post-Katrina Merger into St. Anthony Parish
In April 2008, Archbishop Alfred Hughes announced the largest reorganization of parish life in the modern history of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, closing or downgrading 33 parishes and trimming the total from roughly 141 to 108 in response to the lingering effects of Hurricane Katrina and a deepening shortage of priests. As part of that plan, St. Pius X in Crown Point was downgraded from an independent parish to a satellite mission of St. Anthony Parish in Lafitte. The merger is still the canonical status recorded for St. Pius X in the archdiocese's published list of churches.

Last Known Pastor
At the time the 2008 merger was announced, St. Pius X was being led by the Rev. G. Amaldoss, who spoke to the Times-Picayune about the emotional impact on his parishioners. He said, 'Some people have been upset and crying, feeling like the church has let them down,' and described his own position as 'the last one down on the ladder.' He told parishioners it was up to them to decide how to respond, saying he had no power to organize any alternative and could only pass along the archdiocese's contact information.

The Crown Point Community
Crown Point sits inland on the southern portion of the West Bank of Jefferson Parish, just north of the town of Jean Lafitte and the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, and roughly 10 miles south of Marrero along Bayou Barataria. The Barataria corridor is a historically Cajun, working-class, bayou-dependent stretch of the West Bank whose road network runs on LA 45 (Barataria Blvd.) and, since 1980, on the four-lane Leo Kerner/Lafitte Parkway (LA 3134) with its high-rise bridge over Bayou Barataria. It was precisely this kind of small bayou community that the 2008 reorganization most directly affected.

Patron: Pope St. Pius X
The parish is named for Pope St. Pius X (Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto, 1835–1914), who served as Pope from 1903 until his death and took as his papal motto 'Instaurare omnia in Christo' — 'to restore all things in Christ.' He was canonized in 1954, which is why many U.S. parishes founded in the early 1950s were dedicated or rededicated to him in the years that followed. His feast day is celebrated on August 21.
