St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church is the oldest Catholic parish in Henderson, Nevada, established in 1943 to serve wartime workers at the federal Basic Magnesium plant in what was then Basic Townsite. Located at 204 S. Boulder Highway, the parish belongs to the (Metropolitan) Archdiocese of Las Vegas and continues today as an active, welcoming, Spirit-filled Roman Catholic community nourished by the liturgy and dedicated to serving God and others. It was the area's third Catholic church (after St. Andrew in Boulder City and St. Joan of Arc in Las Vegas), and its founding pastor, Msgr. Peter V. Moran, was instrumental in transforming the wartime Basic Magnesium Hospital into Rose de Lima Hospital (now part of St. Rose Dominican Hospitals). Parish History & Heritage
St. Peter the Apostle was founded in 1943 as a wartime parish of the Diocese of Reno, breaking ground on August 31, 1943, and being dedicated by Bishop Thomas K. Gorman on February 20, 1944. It was the area's third Catholic church (after St. Andrew in Boulder City and St. Joan of Arc in Las Vegas) and was built by the federal Defense Plant Corp. for the workers and families of the Basic Magnesium plant. Its founding pastor, Msgr. Peter V. Moran, was both a spiritual and civic founder — he helped create Rose de Lima Hospital in 1947 and oversaw the parish school that opened in 1951. The parish's story is, in many ways, the story of Henderson itself.

Parish Outreach & Social Mission
Faith at St. Peter the Apostle is lived out in service. The parish partners with Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, the St. Therese Center HIV Outreach, HopeLink of Southern Nevada, and the American Red Cross's Southern Nevada chapter — all of which were highlighted at the 70th anniversary festival. A parish St. Vincent de Paul conference carries on the church's ministry to the poor.

St. Peter's sits on a well-traveled stretch of Boulder Highway — the southeast corner of Boulder Highway and Lake Mead, next to Subway, across from Walgreens, and in front of Walmart — with on-site parking and wheelchair-accessible facilities. The grounds include the historic grotto (rebuilt after the original was removed) and former parish school site.

Founding pastor. Native of County Leitrim, Ireland. Came from a parish in Gardnerville, Nevada. Notified by the Bishop of Reno in March 1943. Set up the first chapel in a house at 22 Idaho Way, then oversaw construction of the church (ground broken Aug. 31, 1943; dedicated by Bishop Thomas K. Gorman on Feb. 20, 1944). Founded the parish school in 1951. Instrumental in transferring the wartime Basic Magnesium Hospital to the Dominican Sisters of Adrian, Michigan, on June 27, 1947, when it was renamed Rose de Lima Hospital.
