About St. Paul VI Parish - Mater Christi Curch-Shrine of Mother of Mothers · North Riverside, Illinois
St. Paul VI Parish is a Roman Catholic territorial parish in the western suburbs of Chicago that unites three formerly independent communities — Mater Christi (North Riverside), St. Mary (Riverside), and St. Hugh (Lyons) — under a single pastoral team formed through the Archdiocese of Chicago's Renew My Church process and canonically established on July 1, 2021. The parish takes its name from Pope St. Paul VI, the pontiff who guided the Second Vatican Council and who had a notably deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its Mater Christi worship site in North Riverside is home to the Mother of Mothers Shrine, a unique outdoor Marian shrine carved from a single block of Italian Carrara marble and dedicated in 1956 by Cardinal Samuel Stritch — the only shrine of its kind in the United States and a recognized pilgrimage destination for mothers and expectant mothers from across the country.

Why belong here
St. Paul VI Parish offers something genuinely rare: a community built around one of the country's most distinctive Marian shrines, set alongside the everyday rhythms of a busy western-suburban parish life. Mater Christi Church hosts the only shrine of its kind in the United States — the Mother of Mothers Shrine, a hand-carved Carrara marble masterpiece brought down an Italian mountainside — and the parish maintains Father Menarik's Marian prayer devotions after every Saturday morning Mass, giving visitors and parishioners a tangible Marian devotion that few American parishes can match. At the same time, St. Paul VI is a real, working parish: a daily and weekly Mass schedule across two worship sites, an active OCIA process, OCIA youth faith formation, a Holy Name Society, a united parish Women's Society, a Hispanic Committee, St. Vincent de Paul outreach, Creation Care and Garden ministries, a Prayer Shawl group, a vibrant music program and a parish school (St. Mary School, Riverside) — all under a single pastoral team serving Lyons, Riverside and North Riverside.

About St. Paul VI Parish
St. Paul VI Parish is a unified Roman Catholic territorial parish in western Cook County formed on July 1, 2021 through the Archdiocese of Chicago's Renew My Church process. It brings together the former Mater Christi (North Riverside), St. Mary (Riverside) and St. Hugh (Lyons) parishes under a single pastor and pastoral team, with Mater Christi Church and St. Mary Church as the two active worship sites and St. Mary School continuing as the parish school. The parish takes its name and inspiration from Pope St. Paul VI, the pope who guided the Second Vatican Council and who had a great personal devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary — a devotion embodied physically in the Mother of Mothers Shrine on the Mater Christi grounds.
Parish History
The parish's history is the convergence of three western-suburban Catholic communities. Mater Christi grew from the North Riverside Catholic community that had previously worshiped at St. Mary in Riverside; St. Hugh served Lyons from 1925; and the present-day St. Paul VI Parish was canonically created by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich's decree of February 25, 2021 and publicly inaugurated on Unification Day, June 27, 2021. Each of those threads is preserved in depth on the parish website's three history pages (parish history, Mater Christi history and St. Hugh history).
- 1850s–1950: St. Mary in Lyons (1885), then Riverside (1899), serves the area; post-WWII home construction brings Catholic families to North Riverside

- 1925: St. Hugh Parish in Lyons is established by Rev. John B. Murphy and dedicated by Cardinal Mundelein
- 2001: St. Hugh School closes after 75 years
- 2020–2021: Renew My Church grouping of St. Hugh, St. Mary, Mater Christi (and briefly St. Pius X)

The Mother of Mothers Shrine
The Mother of Mothers Shrine, on the grounds of Mater Christi Church in North Riverside, is the spiritual heart of the parish and one of the most distinctive Marian shrines in the United States. Carved from a single block of Biancoduro Carrara marble — quarried in Tuscany at the same quarries patronized by Michelangelo — and sculpted at Daprato Studios in Pietrasanta, Italy, it was blessed by Cardinal Samuel Stritch on Mother's Day, May 13, 1956. Its design, by Father Aloysius Menarik, depicts the Blessed Virgin standing on a globe with the Christ Child, gazing down at a modern mother and her infant; the pedestal is carved with the five-petaled Mystical Rose, each petal representing one of the feasts of the Divine Motherhood: the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Purification and Maternity.
- Outdoor shrine open for visitation day and night, with an indoor replica available in bad weather
- Special prayer devotions composed by Father Menarik are read after every Saturday morning Mass
- Annual May Crowning celebrated by students of the (former) Mater Christi School
- Within a year of its dedication, 60,000 mothers in every U.S. state and 10 foreign countries enrolled as members
- 2005–2006 enhancement added a backdrop, mosaic halo and major cleaning (also repaired 1975 vandalism damage)

Heritage & Legacy
St. Paul VI Parish carries a particularly deep Marian and family legacy. The Mother of Mothers Shrine is the only shrine of its kind in the United States, and the parish's mission of praying for mothers and for the grace of motherhood — articulated by Father Menarik in 1956 and reaffirmed under Father Tylka at the shrine's 50th anniversary — remains central to the parish's identity. Naming the new parish after St. Paul VI was a deliberate pastoral choice by Cardinal Cupich: Paul VI implemented Vatican II and was widely known for his personal devotion to Mary and his commitment to the New Evangelization.
- 1956 shrine dedication by Cardinal Stritch: ~2,500–4,000 people; 200 mothers in procession
- Within one year: 60,000 enrollments from every U.S. state and 10 foreign countries
- Shrine repaired after 1975 vandalism, restored and enhanced in 2005–2006
- Father Menarik's prayer devotions still recited after Saturday morning Mass
- Parish patron chosen by Cardinal Cupich from among parishioner-submitted names; first Feast of St. Paul VI celebrated September 26, 2021
