About St. Paul's Parish
St. Paul's Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic parish in New Lisbon, Wisconsin, founded in 1862 to serve the Catholic population of New Lisbon and the surrounding Juneau County countryside. The parish has been part of the Diocese of La Crosse since its founding and today is in the Tomah Deanery. It is part of a tri-parish community — together with St. Michael's Indian Creek (Oakdale) and St. James Camp Douglas — sharing one pastor, one office, and one website (mjpcatholic.com). The parish has more than 200 registered families.
History
The parish was founded in 1862. In its earliest decades there was no resident priest, so the Catholic faithful of New Lisbon gathered in the homes of parishioners whenever a priest was able to ride through the area. A small church near Castle Rock Lake eventually served the community, but as the parish grew, it became too small. In 1963, the present St. Paul's church was built on West River Street in New Lisbon, where the parish continues to worship today. The Diocesan Archives of La Crosse list sacramental records for St. Paul's beginning in 1949, and the parish's Catholic Cemetery on Hog Island Road, north of the city, was established in 1877 and consecrated in 1879 — older than the present church building. Today St. Paul's is one of three parishes in the mjpcatholic.com cluster.
