The Kress mission was established in 1982 as part of the Diocese of Amarillo's outreach to small Panhandle communities. Rex Nicholl, then pastor of Holy Spirit, oversaw St. Paul the Apostle in Kress along with Our Lady of Loreto in Silverton and helped build the Catholic presence across rural Swisher and surrounding counties.
