History of Halder and St. Patrick
Halder was one of the first areas settled around Mosinee, originally called the 'Irish Settlement' because Irish homesteaders — Maguires, O'Connors, Cassidys, Kennedys, Fitzgeralds, Freemans and others — followed each other there by word of letter through Irish communities further east. The first St. Patrick's Church was built in the 1880s to serve these Catholic families; it was later replaced by a second, larger church. A small school on the grounds once housed all eight grades, and a second school was added around 1910 to relieve overcrowding.
