History of the Parish
Catholic life in Kingman County traces to September 1878, when a priest on horseback announced Mass at the McKenna homestead and celebrated the first known Mass in the O'Neil home near present-day Penalosa. The first resident pastor built an early church that was once blown down and rebuilt. Father A. H. Walsh, appointed rector on October 16, 1904, laid the foundation for the present church in 1910 and Bishop John J. Hennessy dedicated the completed brick church (about 400 seats, ~$35,000) in November 1912. Father William Chawke later built the parish's first school in 1930, which the Sisters of St. Joseph opened that fall with Sister Mary Isabella as the first principal.

Parish Life: Formation
Faith formation at St. Patrick spans the youngest children through adults. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is an after-school program for ages 3–12, running weekly from September through May, with volunteer opportunities for catechists, assistants, and material makers. Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM) builds community and faith among high school students through fellowship, prayer, and service on the first and third Wednesdays from 7:00–8:30 pm. St. Patrick Catholic School
St. Patrick Catholic School has been an integral part of Catholic education in the Diocese of Wichita since opening its doors in 1930, with the Sisters of St. Joseph as the founding teachers. The school has been rebuilt and expanded twice — a 1962 addition under Bishop Carroll, and a state-of-the-art replacement building dedicated by Bishop Michael Jackels in February 2010 (project cost ~$6 million, paid in full by February 2014). Under Father Walsh's leadership, the school adopted an Integrated Catholic Curriculum rooted in the Catholic liberal arts, designed to highlight the true, the good, and the beautiful across all subjects. Today the school serves nearly 170 students in pre-K through 8th grade, with full teaching staff, three para-professionals, music, art, technology, and electives in economics and Spanish. Students participate in sports and band through cooperative agreements with the Kingman public school district.
