History
St. Olaf was founded in March 1946 as a mission of the (then) Diocese of Winona. Like most Catholic mission churches in the rural Upper Midwest, it was created so that the small local Catholic population could worship regularly without traveling to larger parish hubs in Caledonia, Spring Grove, or other towns. Over the decades the parish has been served by priests from neighboring parishes; since the early 2010s it has been formally clustered with St. Mary's Church in Caledonia and St. Patrick's in Brownsville, and on July 1, 2023 Father Andrew Vogel was appointed pastor of the cluster. Longtime parishioners like Myrtle Horihan (1925–2018), a farmer on Irish Ridge north of Mabel, are remembered as founding members of the parish.

Mabel & the Surrounding Community
Mabel is a small village of roughly 750 people in the bluffs of southern Fillmore County, near the Iowa border and within easy driving distance of Caledonia, Spring Grove, and Harmony. Settled largely by Norwegian, German, and Irish immigrants in the 1880s, Mabel retains the small-town agricultural character of the Driftless Area. Like many towns of its size, Mabel has a mix of Lutheran (historic majority) and Catholic (minority) heritage; St. Olaf serves the latter community, whose families have farmed the surrounding hills for generations.
