St. Munchin Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic parish in Cameron, Missouri, part of the Diocese of Kansas City–St. Joseph. Founded in 1868 by the Rev. John Joseph Hogan (later the first Bishop of St. Joseph), the parish is the only Catholic church in the United States named for St. Munchin (Mainchín), the patron saint of Limerick, Ireland, after whom Irish settler families in Cameron chose to name their church. The current red-brick church was built in 1893 and has been enlarged and remodeled several times since, most recently with a narthex and Reconciliation room added under Pastor Paul Turner after 2001. Today the parish is led by Fr. Thomas Ludwig, serves the Cameron community and inmates at the nearby Western Missouri Correctional Center, and includes Sacred Heart in Hamilton as a mission parish.

Founding and Early History (1846–1893)
Before 1846 the area around Cameron was served only occasionally by Jesuit missionaries and priests from St. Joseph. That year Fr. Thomas Scanlan began coming from St. Joseph on a regular basis. Several families who had emigrated from Limerick, Ireland chose St. Munchin — one of the patrons of their old Diocese of Limerick — as the name of their new parish. By 1857 about a dozen Catholic families were attending Mass, and by 1859 the Rev. John Joseph Hogan included Cameron on his monthly circuit along the Hannibal–St. Joseph railroad. In 1868, after the railroad reached Kansas City, Hogan erected the first Catholic church building in Cameron, founding the parish the same year he was consecrated first Bishop of St. Joseph. The first resident pastor, Fr. James Foley, arrived in 1870, also serving Breckenridge and Kidder; a two-story frame rectory was built in 1873.

The 1893 Brick Church and 20th-Century Growth
The current red-brick church was constructed in October 1893 and remains the parish's worship home. A Knights of Columbus Council was founded in 1906, and the present red-brick rectory went up in 1907 over the basement of the earlier rectory. Under the long pastorate of Fr. Richard J. Cullen (1899–1924), St. Rita Academy opened in 1923 — first in the former Midland Hotel, then in the Cox residence on Fourth Street — with three Sisters of the Holy Ghost teaching kindergarten through eighth grade; the Sisters of St. Francis from Clinton, Iowa took over in the late 1920s. A high school was added in 1925, and a new St. Rita school building went up in 1949 on land that had held a Congregational Church. The Holy Name Society was founded in 1930 with 97 members and continued until 1980. In the 1984 census the parish counted 230 households and 630 Catholics.

Although St. Rita school closed in the spring of 1970, the building continues to serve the parish as classroom and meeting space and hosts faith-formation programs for the children of St. Munchin and the surrounding missions.

2001 Renovation and Modernization
After 2001, under Pastor Paul Turner, the interior of the 1893 church was remodeled and a narthex was added to the front. A Reconciliation room, vesting room, and rest rooms were also built, giving the parish its current shape and updating the worship space for contemporary liturgical practice while preserving the historic brick exterior.

Prison Ministry at Western Missouri Correctional Center
Since the construction of Western Missouri Correctional Center for men in Cameron in 1987, St. Munchin Parish has been responsible for supplying Mass for the inmates. This prison ministry remains a distinctive part of the parish's outreach and a tangible expression of its commitment to bringing the Eucharist to people on the margins of the community.

Mission Parishes and Amalgamation (Maysville and Hamilton)
St. Munchin has long served a wider rural territory. In May 2024 Bishop James V. Johnston, Jr., after diocesan-wide pastoral planning, decreed the amalgamation of the Mission of St. Aloysius, Maysville (DeKalb County), into St. Munchin Parish, effective June 23, 2024 — the combined community now taking the name Saint Paul the Apostle Parish. Beginning March 2, 2025, Fr. Tom Ludwig was also assigned as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Hamilton, whose office has been joined with St. Munchin's in Cameron. Sacred Heart Mass is celebrated on Sundays at 11 AM.

Organizations and Community Life
Lay organizations have been part of St. Munchin since at least 1906, when the local Knights of Columbus Council was founded.
