Parish History
The parish was established in 1888 in Coos Bay. The 50th anniversary of the parish was commemorated in 1938 with a Mass celebrated by Archbishop Howard — a historic photograph of that liturgy remains a feature on the parish website today. Over more than 135 years the parish has continued to grow as a worshiping community on the southern Oregon coast, today offering Mass in both English and Spanish.

Mass & Worship Schedule
St. Monica celebrates the Mass every day of the week. The Vigil Mass is Saturday at 4:30 p.m. (contemplative), followed by three Sunday Masses: 8:30 a.m. (traditional music), 10:30 a.m. (contemporary music), and 1:00 p.m. in Spanish. Weekday Masses are offered Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday at noon, and Friday at 8:30 a.m., with Morning Prayer at 8:00 a.m. on those mornings. A Monday 10:00 a.m. Mass is offered during the octaves of Easter, Pentecost, and Christmas. The 1st Saturday of each month has an additional 10:00 a.m. Mass.
Devotions & Special Masses
The parish gathers for a monthly Rosary on the first Sunday of each month at 9:45 a.m. in the Parish conference room, with intentions that follow the church calendar (such as graduating students at the end of the school year). St. Monica also holds an annual Memorial Day Mass at 10:00 a.m. on the holiday Monday, a blessing of graduating students at the 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Masses on the first Sunday of June, and Funeral Masses as scheduled by the parish office.

Spanish-Language Ministry (Misa en Español)

Faith Formation & Adult Education
Adult Faith Formation is offered after the Wednesday noon Mass, providing ongoing catechesis and study for adult parishioners. Each year St. Monica participates in the Archdiocese of Portland's Archbishop's Catholic Appeal, the annual fundraising campaign that supports diocesan programs. The parish's recent goal has been $20,000, with funds distributed by the Archdiocese to parish programs (26%), seminarian education (25%), retired priests (20%), diocesan programs and ministries (15%), Catholic education (9%), and vocations (5%).
