Parish History
The first Mass in Mulvane was celebrated at the old City Hall on May 9, 1948, with 107 people in attendance. Bishop Mark K. Carroll then dedicated the first church on December 12, 1948, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, naming it 'St. Michael' in honor of founding pastor Father Michael Lies. The parish grew rapidly: a rectory was built in 1949, a parochial school opened in 1957 with nuns teaching from a converted convent, and a new rectory was added in 1958. A second, larger church was first used for Mass on Ash Wednesday, February 28, 1979, and dedicated by Bishop David M. Maloney on May 27, 1979. The parish center—housing classrooms, offices, and the Adoration Chapel—was dedicated on April 13, 2003, by Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, with then-Pastor Rev. James S. Mainzer assisting. In December 2023 the parish marked 75 years with an anniversary Mass on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
