St. Michael the Archangel Parish is a Roman Catholic community in Livonia, Michigan, within the Archdiocese of Detroit and the Northwest Wayne Vicariate. Parish History
St. Michael Parish was established July 8, 1931 by Bishop Michael J. Gallagher, who appointed Father John Contway as founding pastor of a community of just ten families. The Shelden Land Company donated six acres and the first chapel — dedicated October 21, 1931, seating 350 — is now incorporated into the present school building. By Father Contway's death in 1956 the parish had grown to 1,425 registered families. Successor pastors Father Thomas McMahon, Father Andrew Forish (1966-1987), Father Edward Baldwin, Father Alberto Bondy, Father Edmund Borycz, Father David West (Administrator), and Msgr. William Tindall (since May 1, 2003) have guided the parish through the building of the 1962 church, the 1997-98 school expansion, and the 2018-2021 'Restoring God's House' renovation.

St. Michael the Archangel Catholic School
The parish school is a preschool-through-eighth-grade Catholic elementary school located at 11311 Hubbard (parish campus office at 11441 Hubbard), with its own office hours (Monday-Friday 7:30 am - 3:30 pm, with reduced summer/holiday hours). The school's mission statement frames students as 'champions of academic excellence, and moral leaders for the future,' and works to develop the 'personal worth and Christian values' of every child. The current facility was substantially expanded in the late 1990s and the gymnasium is named in honor of Ed Day, the parish's longtime CYO Athletic Director.

Faith Formation & Religious Education
Faith formation at St. Michael spans the whole life of the parish. Children are served through the parish school and the Religious Education program (Lindsey McCarthy, ext. 202); adults are served through an Adult Faith Formation committee offering classes and groups on topics like Catholic apologetics, the OCIA process, the charismatic gifts (Called & Gifted), and small groups for men and women. Sacramental preparation is offered for First Reconciliation (grade 2, winter), First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage (six-month preparation), and OCIA/RCIA.

Youth Ministry & Athletics
High-school youth ministry at St. Michael includes weekly Sunday meetings, Fall and Spring retreats, an annual mission trip, participation in the March for Life and the WAYMC (Wayne Area Youth Ministry Conference), and ongoing Catholic formation under the Director of Parish Ministry. The parish also fields CYO athletics — baseball, softball, track, and other sports — through a dedicated Athletic Department. Boys in grades 4-12 are eligible to train and serve as altar servers at weekend and weekday liturgies.

Outreach & Parish Life
Outreach ministries at St. Michael include the Gospel of Life Committee (prayer, education, and advocacy around life issues, meeting every other month September-May), the Paper Angels card ministry (volunteers who send sympathy, baptism, wedding, and homebound cards — about 45-50 funeral families served each year), Vacation Bible School (VBS) each summer, an active volunteer list for families in need, and parish funeral and bereavement support.

Sacraments
St. Michael prepares parishioners for and celebrates all seven sacraments of the Catholic Church. Baptisms are celebrated the second and third Sundays after the 12:00 pm Mass, with a required baptism class arranged through the Parish Office. Couples must contact the Parish Office at least six months before their wedding to begin marriage preparation. Children's First Reconciliation is celebrated in the winter of second grade. Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders discernment, OCIA/RCIA, Confirmation, and Reconciliation (with regular Saturday confessions and by appointment) round out the parish's sacramental life.
