About St. Michael the Archangel · Bush, Louisiana

St. Michael the Archangel Mission Church is a Catholic mission of St. Jane de Chantal Parish in Abita Springs, Louisiana, serving the small communities of Bush, Sun and Talisheek in rural St. Tammany Parish. Established on August 2, 1981 with the approval of the Archdiocese, the mission exists so that Catholic families living roughly 25 miles from the mother church no longer have to make that long drive for Mass. Why belong here

St. Michael the Archangel Mission is a small, welcoming Catholic community embedded in the rural Bush/Sun/Talisheek area of St. Tammany Parish — a place where, since 1981, neighbors who would otherwise drive 25 miles to Sunday Mass have instead been able to gather locally. Worship takes place in a distinctive geodesic-dome church on Highway 41, with a Saturday Vigil Mass, a Wednesday evening Mass, and a monthly Sunday Mass on the last Sunday of the month, along with opportunities for confession before Mass and on First Wednesdays. As a mission of St. Jane de Chantal Parish in Abita Springs, St. Michael's offers the warmth and closeness of a small rural mission backed by the full sacramental and pastoral resources of a long-established parish.

History of St. Michael the Archangel Mission

The mission was established on August 2, 1981 by St. Jane de Chantal Parish with the approval of the Archdiocese. For its first year, Mass was offered on Sundays in the Bush United Methodist Church; a year later the mission received its own multi-purpose building, used for Mass, CCD classes, dinners, and fund-raising; and in January 1986 it received a donated geodesic dome church, giving the community a dedicated worship space for the first time.

  • Founded August 2, 1981
  • First Masses celebrated in the Bush United Methodist Church, 1981–1982
  • First mission building acquired in 1982 (shared worship/social/meeting use)
  • Geodesic dome church donated and dedicated in January 1986
  • Operates today as a mission of St. Jane de Chantal Parish under the Archdiocese of New Orleans

Why a Mission in Bush?

St. Jane de Chantal's parish territory spans roughly 200 square miles, with the Bush/Sun/Talisheek corner of the parish almost 20 miles from the church in Abita Springs. In 1981, after years of those families making the long round trip, the parish began the mission under the patronage of St. Michael the Archangel so the Eucharist would be available closer to home — and the mission has continued to serve that rural mission ever since.
