History of St. Michael Parish

St. Michael's began as a mission of St. Mary's of the Assumption, then of St. Gertrude's, and grew out of the Catholic faith of early Irish farmers who first celebrated Mass in local ranch houses in what is now the Waterloo-Morada area of Stockton. According to the Diocese of Stockton, a church was built in 1902 to serve those farming families. The original structure stood for decades but eventually became unsafe, and the parish dedicated its present church in 1965. Today the parish continues that more-than-a-century-old tradition of Catholic worship in northeast Stockton, now as a bilingual community.

  • First church built 1902
  • Began as a mission of St. Mary's, then St. Gertrude's
