A Heritage Parish: 1856 to Today
Founded by German Catholic homesteaders in 1856 and named for St. Michael the Archangel by visiting Jesuit preacher Fr. Francis Xavier Weninger, St. Michael Catholic Church is one of the oldest parishes in the Archdiocese. The community's commitment to Catholic education began with the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1876 and continues unbroken today. The historic 1892 brick neo-gothic church still stands and remains a tangible link to four generations of parishioners; the current domed Byzantine-style church was consecrated on December 19, 2004 as a prayer for Christian unity.

Faith formation at St. Michael is anchored in the conviction that following Jesus Christ is a lifelong adventure of growth involving both mind and heart. The parish offers programs for every stage of life — from Catechesis of the Good Shepherd atria for young children, to Family of Faith for K–6th graders and their parents, to youth ministry and adult formation. A central catechetical vision comes from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#426): to reveal in the Person of Christ the whole of God's eternal design.

St. Michael Catholic School (preK–8)
St. Michael Catholic School has been a cornerstone of the parish since 1876, when the Sisters of Notre Dame opened the first Catholic school and convent. The school serves preK through 8th grade, supporting parents in the education of the whole child by instilling Catholic teachings, nourishing faith in Jesus Christ, and strengthening individual commitment to holiness and academic excellence. In 2026, the school community will celebrate 150 unbroken years of Catholic education in St. Michael.
