History
St. Michael’s began in 1872 with Masses conducted by Father Simonet for French-Indian, Irish, and German settlers near the junction of the Red and Turtle Rivers. A frame church was built in 1878, and by 1883, a larger brick church was dedicated on Sixth Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenue, described as the largest and finest church in Dakota at the time. The parish incorporated in 1884 and has since expanded its ministries, school, and outreach programs while maintaining its historic site.
