History of St. Mel Parish

St. Mel was canonically established on November 12, 1945, by the Diocese of Cleveland. According to the parish history preserved by neighboring Our Lady of Angels, the creation of St. Mel — together with St. Mark (established June 14, 1945) — was part of the post-World War II wave of Catholic parish development on Cleveland's west side, when roughly 150 families were formed out of Our Lady of Angels territory to populate the two new parishes. The parish's Triskett Road site, midway between W. 150th St. and W. 140th St., placed it in a developing residential section of West Park that was growing rapidly with returning veterans and new families.
