The parish was established in 1851 by Father Canavan, beginning with a small congregation. It is recognized as the oldest parish in the Diocese of Shreveport and the spiritual origin of all other parishes in the region. The church’s history includes the arrival of missionary priests, the development of Monroe as a city, and significant milestones such as the 150th anniversary of the parish in 2001 and the 214th anniversary of Catholicism in northeast Louisiana. The parish has endured hardships and remained a unifying force in the community.
