Parish History
St. Matthew Catholic Church was established in May 1922 when Bishop Paul Rhode of the Green Bay Diocese directed the creation of the parish and brought together 25 founding families at St. Joseph's Orphanage. Architect E.W. Reynolds designed the original cream-colored brick combination church-and-school building at the corner of Webster Avenue and St. Matthew Street; construction began in October 1924 (cost ~$35,000) and St. Matthew School opened in fall 1925 under two Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross. A new red-brick church and school were completed the week before Christmas 1952, and the current church and Gathering Space were dedicated in May 2003. The parish marked its 100th anniversary in September 2022.

Anointing of the Sick & Pastoral Visits
The Pastoral Team — Fr. Bob Kabat, Deacon Bob Hornacek, Anissa Willkom, and Amy Weiss — is available to anoint those who are sick or dying, visit parishioners admitted to the hospital, and arrange home visits for those who wish to receive communion at home. Requests can be made by calling the parish office at 920-435-6811.

Faith Formation & Religious Education
Generations of Faith (GOF) is St. Matthew's intergenerational faith-formation program for families whose children attend public school, and is open to anyone who wants to grow deeper in their faith. The whole family meets Wednesday evenings (about twice a month) for an optional 5:15 pm dinner followed by a 5:45–7:00 pm session that includes shared prayer and age-appropriate breakout groups (elementary, middle school, high school, and adult). Sacramental preparation for First Eucharist and First Reconciliation involves parent meetings, parent/child meetings, and home materials, and requires the child be enrolled in either Father Allouez Catholic School or GOF and a regular participant in parish life.

Father Allouez Catholic School
St. Matthew Catholic Community is part of Father Allouez Catholic School, formed in 2016 when St. Matthew and Resurrection parishes combined their schools. The school is part of the Green Bay Area Catholic Education (GRACE) system. St. Matthew hosts the Elementary Campus (Early Childhood through Grade 4) at 2575 S. Webster Avenue, Green Bay, while Resurrection hosts the Middle School Campus (Grades 5–8). The principal is Kay Franz ([email protected]); school phone 920-432-5223.

The parish is served by a pastor, deacon, and lay staff. Fr. Bob Kabat, a Green Bay native and lifelong Wisconsin sports fan, has served parishes across the Diocese of Green Bay including a 35-year stint on the diocesan Marriage Tribunal; this is his second assignment at St. Matthew.
