Parish History
Catholic life in the Greenville area predates the parish's formal organization. Between 1835 and 1839, settlers built a small log chapel — St. Charles in Silvis, also called St. Charles in the Woods and possibly St. Jacob's — three miles northeast of Greenville along what is now State Route 121. The chapel was never formally blessed and had no altar; parishioners took turns leading prayers and Masses, while official rites were performed at established Catholic churches elsewhere. The site became St. Mary's Cemetery, where the earliest marked grave is that of Anthony Sucher (d. August 5, 1845, aged 1 year). In 1863 the rural congregation organized as St. Mary's of the Annunciation and relocated into Greenville onto West Third Street, where the present church stands. The Catholic community had been served since at least 1856 by Fr. Francis X. Mauclerc, S.M., who pastored St. Mary from 1856 to 1862 while based in Dayton and also founded Our Lady of Good Hope in Miamisburg and Mary, Help of Christians in Fairborn. GCatholic records the parish's foundation year as 1853.

St. Mary's supports an active Rosary Altar Society, which is best known locally for hosting the parish's annual Holiday Bazaar — a tradition now more than fifty years old that draws Greenville-area shoppers with bake sales, religious goods, handmade crafts, a soup-and-sandwich luncheon, and the society's famous homemade cinnamon rolls. St. Mary's Cemetery
St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, located in Greenville Township, Darke County, sits on the original site of the 1835–1839 log chapel of St. Charles in Silvis. The cemetery is registered with the Ohio Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing (license CBR.0000983006) and is recorded in the Ohio Genealogical Society's 'Ohio Cemeteries 1803–2003' as entry #2713. The faint outline of the original chapel driveway can still be seen in Section A, where no tombstones were ever placed.
