Parish History & Heritage
St. Mary's in Wimberley grew out of the Catholic mission history of Blanco County. According to the documented history of St. Ferdinand Catholic Church in Blanco, the Catholic community of the Texas Hill Country was originally served by St. Mary's Help of Christians (dedicated June 25, 1899 as the first Catholic Church in Blanco County). When the new St. Ferdinand church was built in 1940 under the Archdiocese of San Antonio, that original St. Mary's became a cemetery chapel. From St. Ferdinand, several mission parishes were founded across the Hill Country — including St. Mary's in Wimberley, St. Martin de Porres in Dripping Springs, and Good Shepherd in Johnson City.
