About St. Mary of Lourdes (St. Mary Worship Site, Mayville) · Mayville, New York

Why belong here
St. Mary of Lourdes is a two-site parish rooted in nearly a century of Catholic life on Chautauqua Lake, where the Mayville church still houses windows and devotional art connected to the now-Venerable Nelson Baker. Active parishioners can join a working faith community that sustains both a St. Vincent de Paul Society for local outreach and a Youth & Young Adult Ministry, and the wider Chautauqua Family of Catholic Churches offers faith formation programming and sacramental preparation for every age. Confession is available at both sites (Saturdays in Bemus Point and by appointment in Mayville) and a parish hall in Bemus Point hosts parish gatherings — making it a small but well-served parish for families, retirees, and seasonal residents alike.

History of St. Mary of Lourdes Parish
The parish was formed in 2008 by merging two older Chautauqua Lake congregations: St. Mary, Mayville (church established 1926) and Our Lady of Lourdes, Bemus Point (chapel 1940, independent parish 1948). The new parish took the combined name St. Mary of Lourdes, and both original churches remain in use as worship sites. The Mayville church has a direct link to Venerable Nelson Baker, Vicar General of the Diocese of Buffalo and builder of the Our Lady of Victory Basilica in Lackawanna, who oversaw the design and construction of St. Mary's windows and donated devotional pieces that still adorn the church.
- St. Mary, Mayville — church established 1926
- Our Lady of Lourdes, Bemus Point — chapel 1940, parish 1948
- Merged in 2008 under the Diocese of Buffalo's 'Journey in Faith and Grace' initiative
- GCatholic records the parish as established in 2008
Venerable Nelson Baker and the Mayville Church
According to the Diocese of Buffalo's Pilgrimage Guidebook, Venerable Nelson Baker was Vicar General when St. Mary's in Mayville was built. He hired the same craftsman — Buffalo artisan Otto F. Andrle, who had just completed the windows of the new Our Lady of Victory Basilica — to design the Mayville church's windows. Baker suggested the church be named 'St. Mary of Victory' in honor of his lifelong Marian devotion, but the name was not adopted. Though he was too ill to attend the dedication, he donated the side-altar statue of Our Lady of Victory and the Our Lady of Victory window above the main entrance, both of which remain in the church.
- Windows designed by Otto F. Andrle (the same artisan as the OLV Basilica windows)
- Our Lady of Victory side-altar statue — gift of Fr. Baker
