History of Our Lady of Częstochowa Chapel
St. Mary Mercy Hospital, founded by the Felician Sisters, maintained a Catholic chapel called Our Lady of Częstochowa Chapel for many years before the present worship space was built. After hospital leadership concluded that the older chapel had been overlooked during earlier renovations of the facility, a 2017 feasibility study led to the decision to construct an entirely new chapel. The project was completed in 2018 as part of the hospital's 'Generations Together' campaign, and Auxiliary Bishop Gerard Battersby formally dedicated the new chapel on September 11, 2018.

The chapel is named for Our Lady of Częstochowa, the Black Madonna venerated especially by Polish Catholics and intimately familiar to many families of Livonia and the surrounding western Wayne County communities. Her feast day is August 26.

Sacraments and Devotions
The Our Lady of Częstochowa Chapel is centered on the celebration of daily Mass and the reserved Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle, available for prayer at any hour. Through the Spiritual Care team, the sacraments of the Anointing of the Sick and last rites can be brought to patients at their bedsides. The chapel is staffed for prayer support and sacramental care 24 hours a day.

Spiritual Care and Chaplaincy
Trinity Health Livonia's Spiritual Care department is built around professionally prepared chaplains, chaplain interns, and volunteers who respect the traditions and customs of every religion. The team supports patients, families, and hospital staff — including during the pandemic, when chaplain Larry Lyons and his colleagues offered continuous in-person ministry on the COVID-19 wards. The team also created 'Resiliency Rounding,' an initiative that walks alongside caregivers to help sustain the spiritual and mental health of the hospital's own workforce.

Architecture and Sacred Art
The new 2018 chapel was designed by PLY+ Architecture of Ann Arbor with Fr. Gilbert Sunghera, SJ, of the University of Detroit Mercy serving as liturgical design consultant. The space was conceived to be unambiguously Catholic rather than a generic interfaith room. A hand-carved wooden crucifix from Germany is suspended above an altar built of Wisconsin limestone, and a 16-foot dichroic window beside the tabernacle refracts sunlight so the interior colors shift throughout the day. Stations of the Cross salvaged from closed churches in Wisconsin and Ohio line the south wall, and a Russian icon is displayed in the chapel. Outside, a statue of St. Francis of Assisi and a small rock garden lead toward a planned prayer garden.

Donors and Funding
The new chapel is one hundred percent donor-funded. The largest gifts came from the Felician Sisters of North America — the hospital's founding religious order — and from local benefactors Tom and Vicki Celani and Bob and Kim Mazur. Roughly eighty employee physicians and seven hundred non-employee and partner practices added their contributions through the 'Generations Together' campaign.

Visiting the Chapel
The chapel is located on the first floor of Trinity Health Livonia Hospital near the north entrance, with the full address 36475 Five Mile Road, Livonia, MI 48154. Visitors entering the hospital for prayer only should ask main-entrance staff to direct them to the chapel. The worship space is open every hour of every day, and a large revolving door closes only during the celebration of Mass.
