About St. Mary Magdalene Parish

St. Mary Magdalene is a growing Catholic parish in Newnan, Georgia, serving families throughout Coweta County in the southwestern deanery of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. The parish community is rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and united in a mission to live out the Catholic faith through worship, service, formation, and fellowship. Parishioners worship reverently, serve generously, and seek to live the joy of the Gospel in everyday life. The parish welcomes lifelong Catholics, returning Catholics, and those exploring the faith for the first time. Its stated aim is for every individual and family to encounter Christ, grow in discipleship, and find a place to belong, grow, and serve.

History

The parish was born in the fall of 1999 as the Sharpsburg Catholic Mission under the direction of the Archdiocese of Atlanta, with Father John Walsh — then-pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Peachtree City — shepherding the founding community. The first Mass was celebrated by 218 faithful in a local elementary school gymnasium; worship then moved to a high school cafeteria parishioners called the "Chapelteria." The mission outgrew three temporary worship sites (Thomas Crossroads Elementary School, Cokes United Methodist Chapel, and East Coweta High School) before building a permanent home. The Archdiocese elevated the community to parish status on October 25, 2003, and on February 8, 2007, Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory dedicated the new church on more than 30 acres of wooded property in eastern Coweta County before some 650 parishioners. By its 25th anniversary the parish had grown to 1,250 families and constructed Annunciation Hall to house faith formation and the parish preschool.

Pastoral Leadership and Staff

Father Michael Revak was appointed administrator of St. Mary Magdalene effective July 1, 2025, by Archbishop Gregory John Hartmayer, OFM Conv., in the 2025 Archdiocesan priest assignments. He succeeds Father Terry Crone, who served the parish for 12 years and oversaw its growth from 800 to 1,250 families. Father Revak has led a parish pilgrimage to Poland and is working with the Finance and Pastoral Advisory Councils on a church beautification project, including installation of new Stations of the Cross. Three deacons — Rev. Mr. Tom Eden, Rev. Mr. Jim Weeks, and Rev. Mr. Alex Kuriatnyk — assist in pastoral care, including visiting the homebound. The parish also employs a Director of Operations (Carrie Clemens), Director of Parish Life and Evangelization (Gina DeGennaro), Director of Faith Formation (Maureen Lilly), Youth Minister (Beth Gray), Music Director (Kathye Schattner), and maintenance and administrative staff.

Faith Formation & Religious Education

The Faith Formation office ministers to every age and stage, from preschool through adulthood. Programs include Elementary Faith Formation (K–6), Middle School and High School Youth Ministry, the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) and Children (OCIC), Adult Faith Formation with Small Groups and Bible Studies, and Sacramental Preparation for Baptism, First Reconciliation, First Eucharist, and Confirmation. The parish also hosts Small Faith Communities, Returning Catholics, and the Echo Apprentice program.

Parish Preschool

The Saint Mary Magdalene Catholic Church Preschool operates under the supervision of the Archdiocese of Atlanta Office of Catholic Schools, with Director Gina DeGennaro and Assistant Director Heather Alley. The preschool uses the STREAM curriculum (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, and Math), Handwriting Without Tears, Big Day for Pre-K by Scholastic, and Stories of God's Love by RCL Benzinger, with daily music and movement, monthly cooking activities in the Pre-K Café, monthly walking library field trips, and frequent family fellowship events.

Justice, Charity, and Outreach

St. Mary Magdalene runs an active Justice and Charity Outreach ministry, organized under the parish's commitment to serve the wider Coweta County community. The parish partners with the local ecumenical One Roof coalition, supports families in need through St. Vincent de Paul, prepares Mercy Meals for those in crisis, and maintains a strong Respect Life witness. The Knights of Columbus Council is one of the most visible parish organizations, alongside the Council of Catholic Women.

Parish Life, Fellowship, and Devotions

Beyond the sacraments, St. Mary Magdalene cultivates community through Bible studies, the Supper Club, Soul Sisters women's group, Grief Ministry, Natural Family Planning (Couple to Couple), Cursillo/Ultreya, and Small Faith Communities. The parish's patroness — St. Mary Magdalene, "apostle to the apostles, first to see the risen Christ" — is honored with special prayers and a parish pilgrimage to Poland under Father Revak. The parish also operates an ongoing church beautification project, including the installation of new Stations of the Cross.
