Parish History

Plans for a Catholic church to serve San Angelo's Spanish-speaking Catholic community go back to the early 1900s. In 1929 the Most Rev. Rudolph Aloysius Gerken, first bishop of the new Diocese of Amarillo, secured a city block and obtained funding from the Catholic Extension Society to build a new mission church. Father J.H. Krukkert, pastor of Sacred Heart, oversaw construction of the buff-brick, red-tile-roofed church — named St. Mary of the Immaculate Heart — which Bishop Gerken dedicated on August 31, 1930. The site then stood just beyond the San Angelo city limit on Chadbourne Street. For its first decades the church was served as a mission of Sacred Heart Parish. In July 1947 it became an independent parochial vicarate; a new parish hall was dedicated in 1952 and a new rectory followed in 1955. On August 1, 1960, St. Mary's was raised to a full parish in its own right under Church law. When Pope John XXIII erected the Diocese of San Angelo on October 16, 1961, St. Mary's came under the new diocese while its mother parish, Sacred Heart, was named the cathedral church.
