History of St. Mary
Catholic life in the Henrietta area predates the city of Henrietta itself. According to the Texas State Historical Association, the original St. Mary's Catholic Church was built in 1878 at Cambridge, three miles northeast of present-day Henrietta. Cambridge was then the principal settlement of Clay County; the U.S. Army operated a telegraph office there, and the town had its own post office from 1875. Everything changed when, in July 1882, the Fort Worth and Denver Railway extended its tracks through Henrietta, which became the new county seat. Most Cambridge residents and businesses relocated to Henrietta, and Cambridge's post office closed; by 1991 only a cemetery remained at the original townsite. The Catholic community followed the population shift to Henrietta, where St. Mary's continues today as one of the Diocese of Fort Worth's small rural parishes.
- 1878 – Original St. Mary's Catholic Church built at Cambridge, Texas
- 1875 – Cambridge received postal service
- 1882 – Fort Worth & Denver Railway bypasses Cambridge for Henrietta; Henrietta becomes county seat
- Cambridge post office closes; community relocates to Henrietta
- 1991 – Only a cemetery remains at the old Cambridge townsite
Our Catholic Parishes (Four-Parish Cluster)
St. Mary's website is shared with three neighboring Catholic parishes that together form one pastoral family served by Rev. Marianna Francis Chinthamalla, HGN, and bookkeeper Carol Haigood. All four churches use the same mailing address (105 S. Barrett Street, Henrietta, TX 76365) and the same office phone number. This arrangement is typical of rural ministry in north Texas and allows Catholics across Clay, Montague, and surrounding counties to receive regular Mass, confession, and adoration close to home.
