History

St. Mary Catholic Church was founded in 1899 in Hamshire, Texas, to serve Catholic families in the rural areas of western Jefferson County. Over the decades it has been the spiritual home for the communities of Hamshire, Fannett, LaBelle, and Cheek. In 1972, St. Martin de Porres Catholic Mission was established in Cheek, and the two parishes have since operated as a united Catholic community within the Diocese of Beaumont.
