Parish Identity & History

St. Mary Church in Coventry, Connecticut, was established in 1869 and is today part of Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish in the Diocese of Norwich. The parish unites the historic Catholic community of Coventry with St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel in Storrs on the University of Connecticut campus, creating a single worshipping family that serves both longtime families and the UConn student body.

Faith Formation & Religious Education

The parish Faith Formation program, led by Director Rebecca Holmes, ministers to children from Pre-K through Grade 10. Classes meet at the Our Lady Queen of Peace Faith Formation Center in the hall at St. Mary's Church, 1600 Main Street. Sacramental preparation is offered for First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation.

Campus Ministry at Storrs / UConn

Through St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel on the UConn campus, the parish runs an active Catholic Center for students. The center hosts daily Mass and confessions during the academic year, weekly Pasta Suppers on Wednesdays, Pancake nights on Thursdays, movie nights, retreats, a Men-serve-Women service night, and a Eucharistic Holy Hour for Vocations every Thursday from 7:00-8:00 PM. FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) missionaries are based at the center and lead Bible studies and outreach.

Sacraments

Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish celebrates all seven Catholic sacraments. The parish website explains that the Sacraments are visible signs instituted by Christ that communicate God's grace, organized as the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist), the Sacraments of Healing (Penance and Anointing of the Sick), and the Sacraments at the Service of Communion (Marriage and Holy Orders). Preparation for First Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation is handled through the Faith Formation office.
