History of St. Martin Parish
St. Martin's was established in 1916 to relieve pressure on the rapidly growing St. Joseph Parish in Mountain View. Population growth brought by the railroad and the early development of Sunnyvale made it impractical for residents to continue traveling to Mountain View, and Bishop Patrick Riordan's jurisdiction (later succeeded by the Diocese of San Jose) created the new parish as a local mission of the faith. The parish was named after St. Martin of Tours, one of the most beloved saints of early Christianity, whose feast is celebrated on November 11. The parish's founding laid the groundwork for further Catholic expansion in Sunnyvale and the surrounding communities over the 20th century.
