History of the Parish
The parish on Turney Road is the second Cleveland-area community to bear the name of St. Martin of Tours. The first was a Slovak ethnic parish on the city's east side, founded in 1893 by Bishop Ignatius F. Horstmann for members of St. Ladislas Parish who had moved east. That community built a French Gothic stone church at Scovill Avenue and E. 23rd Street in 1907, but by the mid-1950s its membership had collapsed from a peak of about 2,500 families to just 55. The school closed in 1950 and the church in 1958, with furnishings sent ahead to the new St. Martin of Tours in Maple Heights. The final Mass was celebrated on September 11, 1960, ending with the Te Deum sung in Slovak, and the building was razed the same week.

Architecture of the Church
The 1961 St. Martin of Tours church in Maple Heights is one of Cleveland's most distinctive mid-century Catholic churches. Designed by the local firm Conrad & Fleischman, the building was architect Richard Fleischman's first major project. Its church-in-the-round plan, octagonal base, and octagonal tower filled with vertical sheets of colorful glass were designed to bring the assembly as close as possible to the centrally placed altar in the sanctuary. The Ohio History Connection has documented the building as an architecturally significant example of suburban parish design from the era.

Faith Formation and Youth Ministry
Sacramental preparation and youth ministry are central to the parish's family life. The sacramental coordinator works with families preparing for the sacraments, and a dedicated youth minister accompanies the parish's younger members. St. Martin of Tours is the founding parish of St. Benedict Catholic School, an inter-parochial Catholic elementary school that opened on July 1, 2012, through the merger of the parish schools of St. Martin of Tours and St. Monica of Garfield Heights. The school is governed by a Board of Directors and serves families in Maple Heights, Garfield Heights, and surrounding southeast Cleveland communities. Grades K–8 are housed at the former St. Monica campus on Rockside Road, while the Maple Heights campus at 14600 Turney Road continues to operate as the St. Benedict Early Learning Center. Total enrollment Pre-K through 8 is approximately 470.

Patron and Feast Day
The parish is named for St. Martin of Tours (c. 316–397), the Roman soldier-turned-bishop of Tours who is one of the most popular saints of France and patron of soldiers, beggars, tailors, and horsemen. His feast day is celebrated on November 11, the traditional date of his burial at Tours.
